Important Information for Athletes Turning 18
Athletes turning 18 at any time during the 2025-26 season are required to complete Safesport training to activate their membership. Once an athlete turns 18, they are emailed instructions on how to register for a background screening.
Q: When a member turns 18, they have a 45-day grace period AFTER their birthday in which to complete and get the green light on their background check. Correct?
A: Correct! On day 46, the athlete's membership would move back to pending status if they have yet to complete the screening process and receive a green light determination. Pending status means an athlete can not participate and will not appear on any points lists that are published while the athlete is on pending status. If allowed to start in an event through a mistake on-site, the result will be marked Not Permitted to Start (NPS), and they will not get any point credit for that result. That result credit will not be given back after the completion of the requirements.
Q: When a member turns 18, when does the SafeSport training requirement need to be completed by?
A: The U.S. Center for SafeSport does not provide a grace period for SafeSport training!
So, U.S. Ski & Snowboard requires the athlete to complete training to activate their membership in that season at the time of registration. The last thing we want to see is an athlete being pulled from competition or missing a points list for failing to complete training on a timely basis.
